What does Roy PTA do for our school?

6th Grade Camp - PTA has committed $1800 this school year to support all 6th graders being able to attend 6th grade camp.   The students enjoy this experience tremendously and we want all our children to be able to attend this event each year, regardless of their household income level.
Assemblies - PTA sponsors 3 assemblies throughout the school year.  In the past we have had Chinese Acrobats, Pacific Science Center, The Jump Rope Guy, The Reptile Man, Wildlife Adventures etc..  PTA has budgeted $1800 this year for assemblies.
Reading Program - Mrs. Ward oversees our reading program at the school.   Our program is completely funded by the Roy PTA.  This year, $450 was spent on over 300 books.  Each child in school is given a book they may keep.
Teacher Allowances - The PTA has given each teacher at Roy Elementary an annual allowance, to help offset the many personal dollars that our teachers spend each year to educate our children.   Teachers must submit receipts and the PTA Board approves reimbursement to the teachers based on set guidelines for expenditures.
Red Ribbon Week - Red Ribbon Week is a drug awareness week that was brought to our school  by Kim Nelson and Chief Hawk in 2001.   Chief Hawk has passed away, but Mrs. Nelson continues to personally fund and direct this fun-filled week of activities for our kids each year, along with Chief Hawk's son, Jake Hawk.   Our kids participate in a week of drug and alcohol prevention activities and release hundreds of balloons with our drug prevention message on them for tracking throughout the year.  Our launch event this year was "dampened" considerably as it was pouring down rain!   A smaller number of balloons were released later in the week instead.   This year, the PTA membership voted to increased our spending to $700 to support this activity as the local community was not able to contribute monetarily to this effort as they have in the past.  Each student received a Red Ribbon T-Shirt this year and had opportunities to earn pencils and other prizes during the week of events.
Treasure Tower - The PTA has taken on the funding of the very popular Treasure Tower located in the school office.   Staff members have tokens that are given to students for good behavior.  The Treasure Tower contains a variety of favorite items:  pencil erasers, necklaces, squishy eyeballs and figurines are just some of the "treasures" students can choose from. We have budgeted $500 this year for the Treasure Tower.

Lunchroom - The PTA helps ensure that no student goes without lunch here at Roy Elementary.  PTA budgeted  $50 this year to pay for students that have no lunch credit left and would otherwise go without lunch.
Open House - PTA sponsors the Roy Elementary Open House held each year the week before school begins.   PTA pays for the food and other expenses to welcome new and returning students to our school.

Battle of the Books - Battle of the Books is a voluntary district-wide reading program sponsored by the Elementary Teacher-Librarians and each school's PTA . The purpose of this program is to encourage students to read good books while preparing for an engaging competition. The program requires the student participants to read a minimum of five books from a selected list of 18-20 titles selected by the participating librarians from the newly released Sasquatch Award list and the Young Reader's Choice Award list. The students form teams of four students to compete against other teams. Within each school the teams compete in a tournament similar to the College Bowl. During the competition the teams earn points by correctly answering questions about the books on the list. The team with the most points at the end of the tournament wins and is invited to continue to the next level of competition at the district level.

The Roy Elementary tournament will be on April 27, 2010 and the district competition will be May 6, 2010. The winning team at the district competition brings a trophy back to their school to display for the year.  Each participating school's PTA has been asked to donate $100 this year, which goes toward the purchase of ribbons, trophies, certificates, and prizes for all the participants.

Spring Family Fun Night - A school-wide picnic is planned with fun-filled activities for the whole family.  This event is tentatively planned for a Saturday in May 2010.  If you have an interest in helping with this event, please see the Volunteer Page.

Spirit Award -  Each Friday, every student that wears Roy Elementary colors (blue, white, red or grey) are counted and the class with the most "Roy Spirit" showing get to keep our special stuffed horse wearing a Roy Mustang T-shirt for the next week.  At the end of the school year, the PTA provides an ice cream party to the classroom that has showed the most "Roy Spirit" during the school year.

Popcorn Days - One or two days a month, PTA volunteers make popcorn and sell it to students for $.25 to eat at recess.   Each student that wears Roy Mustang apparel is eligible to get a free bag of popcorn.   PTA pays for supplies to make and bag the popcorn.   Although PTA does make some money from the popcorn sales, we general spend more than we make on this.

Student Store - One or two days a month, PTA volunteers sell small school supplies and trinkets to students.  The volunteers bag the items purchased and collect the bags for delivery to the classrooms before school ends that day.   This ensures that the items purchased do not distract the students in the classroom.

Rodeo - PTA volunteers run a booth selling candy and trinkets to Rodeo patrons during Roy Rodeos in June and September each year.   This is generally a good fundraiser for PTA, but this year the September rodeo weekend was extremely rainy and sales were pretty slow.   PTA often enlists the helps of interested 6th Graders, who earn a preset amount per hour towards 6th Grade Camp by helping at the booth.   PTA volunteers are always needed to purchase items, setup, cleanup and sales in the booth.

Fall Dance/Carnival - PTA provides the food and decorations and, this year, the dance DJ for this event.   No admission was charged and all children received a bag of treats and were able to attend the dance.   Each food and game tickets cost $.25 and that money was used to defray the cost of the event.   This year the dance raised $449 for the PTA.

T-Shirt Sales - PTA orders a number of different T-Shirts, sweat pants and shirts, and hoodies with our Roy Mustang logo on them.   We offer them for sale throughout the year and try to have them available for sale at PTA events.   If you are interested, please fill out a T Shirt Order Form and contact a Board Member.
Secret Santa Shop - Each year, the PTA organizes a Secret Santa Shop for the children of Roy Elementary.  The Secret Santa Shop was held this year on December 14-16, 2009. The purpose of the Shop is to allow our kids a non-commercial, safe place for them to shop for holiday gifts for their family and friends.  There were over 100 reasonably priced items for sale that the kids enjoyed purchasing.  The PTA arranged with the teachers for each class to spend around 45 minutes shopping with money that parents send with the child for this purpose.  PTA volunteers arrange for the items that are sold, run the cash register, help the children with money budgeting plus do the setup and cleanup.   PTA made $516 this year from the Secret Santa Shop.
Staff Appreciation - Each year, the PTA throws the staff of Roy Elementary a party celebrating all the wonderful ways that our staff enriches the lives of our children.  PTA volunteers provide and prepare the food and prizes for this event.
Volunteer Recognition - Every day, parents of Roy Elementary students help our school be a better place for our kids in numerous ways.  PTA volunteer time is logged by the parent on each visit and tracked by the PTA.   PTA sponsors an event at the end of the school year to show our appreciation  for all our wonderful parents and all they do for our school.
Community and District Projects - The PTA Board chooses which community and district projects that our local unit might become involved in.   PTA has budgeted $950 this year for this purpose.   No projects have been chosen yet this year.  If you have a project that you would like PTA to donate to, please contact a Board Member.

Book Fair - PTA provides the volunteers to run the Scholastic Book Fair twice a year.  All monies earned pay for books for the School Library.  Book Fair is held during conference week in October and March.
